In an organic garden, achieving a bountiful harvest isn't about total insect eradication but rather maintaining a healthy ecosystem. However, when specific caterpillars—often referred to as "worms"—threaten to decimate your hard work, intervention becomes necessary. Understanding their life cycles and the damage they inflict is the first step toward effective, chemical-free management.
1. Squash Vine Borer: The Hidden Threat
The squash vine borer is one of the most destructive pests for summer squash and pumpkins.
Life Cycle and Damage
Egg to Larva: A clear-wing moth lays eggs at the base of the plant's stem. Once these hatch, the larvae bore directly into the stem to feed from the inside.
Impact: As the larvae consume the internal tissue, they disrupt the plant's ability to transport water. This results in sudden wilting and often the death of the entire plant overnight.
Identification: Look for small holes and "sawdust-like" waste, known as frass, near the base of the main stem.
